Overture of the Wicked is the latest offering from Iced Earth, an EP that is a pre-curser to their much anticipated double albums about their mascot Set Abominae titled "Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part 1)" and "Revelation Abomination (Something Wicked Part 2)". It is mostly the original Something Wicked trilogy off of their 1998 album Something Wicked This Way Comes, re-recorded with Tim Owens taking the vocal duties this time, Jon Schaffer on rhythm and lead guitar, bass guitar, and backup vocals, Tim Mills on lead guitar, and Brent Smedley on the drums.
Track by Track
Ten Thousand Strong - The first song and a damn good one too. It's fast, emotional, and heavy. This song is supposed to be on the first of the new double albums "Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part 1)" but in a slightly different version as guitarist Jon Schaffer says.
Prophecy - 1st part in the original Something Wicked trilogy. Owens gave it a very good try, but as a fan I did prefers Barlow’s voice on this song. Near the end the songs goes into a semi tribal sound, which I thought was quite fitting.
Birth of the Wicked - Part 2 of the original trilogy. Tim Owens does this song very well. The guitars in it sound awesome! I don’t know what else to say about this song except it’s good to headbang too.
The Coming Curse – Part 3 of the original trilogy and final track of "Overture of the Wicked" Very dark and heavy. What I loved was Tim Mill’s guitar solo at 2:22. The only thing I disliked about this song is that it was cut a minute and a half, the original at 9:33 and this version at 8 minutes. But still good none the less.
