Review
This release from Cold Spring records is a rather bizarre entity as it contains a collection of studio tracks (including a remix) and live tracks (recorded at one of my favourite haunts - The Underworld, Camden).
The band, comprised of members and former members of Mayhem, Shining and Sunn 0)), play an intense mixture of Doom, Black Metal and some overall weirdness. The result is a collection of songs seemingly created for the sole purpose of making even the most confident listener a little paranoid. This is not for the faint of heart - this is music to make you want to look over your shoulder and maybe check under the bed for monsters. The songs on "Amfetamin" don't conjure images of horror because they're brutal (far from it), they achieve this atmosphere by being far more subtle. The down-tempo melodies (check out "Slow Pain Coming" for a particularly un-nerving experience) shake you to your bones and, when coupled with the vocals, make for fantastically eerie listening.
The studio tracks have a far fuller sound (and give you a better idea of what the band is capable of), but the level of production on the live tracks is impressive - especially considering that Skitliv are firmly rooted in the underground.
