Is "Good To Be Bad" your run-of-the-mill Whitesnake album? Yes, of course it is, but the thing that's worth remembering is that a run-of-the-mill Whitesnake album is infinitely better than some of the other stuff that's lurking around in the Rock genre at the moment. While Whitesnake aren't going to win any prizes for pushing boundaries, they have created a fantastic rock record with this offering. Coverdale's vocals are spot on and will prove to any critics out there that he certainly hasn't "lost it" and the overall production is brilliant (as you'd expect). The guitar melodies are awesome and the solos are very memorable. The only thing that lets this album down is that some of the lyrics are a little cheesy... the trouble is that I just can't help from singing along! Within the first listen (or the first couple of listens at least) I can assure you that you will know most, if not all, of the words.
So, who will this appeal to other than Whitesnake fans? The answer to that is people who don't know they're Whitesnake fans yet! If you like classic rock with a mind-blowing vocalist and big sing-along songs then you can't go far wrong with this album. This is a perfect summer / driving record (even though I don't drive... but that's a minor detail!). It was also brilliant for when I was putting together some sofa beds. It doesn't require you to give it your full attention, so it's perfect for tasks like that. It's also good for listening to while posing in front of the mirror (cheekbones anyone!?) - not that I'd ever do that.
"Good To Be Bad" isn't going to change the world, but if you just want a straight up classic rock album then I'd highly recommend this. Stand out tracks include "Call on Me" (my favourite track), "Can You Hear The Wind Blow", "Best Years" and "Fool in Love".
