I've been a fan of Stuka Squadron for quite sometime, but up until the 22 March 2009 I had never got around to actually catching one of their gigs. Since this gig was their fourth (I think!), that wasn't too surprising. What is surprising is that I class myself as a fan, even though they only have an EP and four gigs under their belt... but, you've gotta admit, it's a damn fine EP.
So, the band had a lot to live up to with this gig. Not only was I there, which - let's be honest, is reason enough, but also because they had recently been featured in Metal Hammer. I was expecting nothing short of a metal induced miracle. Did I get it? Damn straight!
Stuka Squadron have proved that they are well-deserving of the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal tag that they've been labeled. Their songs are catchy, well written and give you that unmistakable urge to bang your head (note: do not try to do this after a few pints, while trying to film the gig... the results of this experiment can be seen below). The band put on a fantastic show and it's so great to see a band that's not content with just getting onstage and playing a few songs - these guys drag you into their world. A world of vampires, war and bloodshed... sounds like a typical weekend to me!
